What sealing method is suitable for vertical mud pumps?

There are many forms of sealing for mud pumps, including packing seals, mechanical seals, oil seals, etc. Mud pumps adopt different sealing forms according to different pump types. Normally, horizontal mud pumps use packing seals, and vertical mud pumps use packing seals. Choose oil seal + mechanical seal. The advantages and disadvantages of various sealing forms are introduced below:

  • Oil seal

  • Mechanical seal

  • Packing seal

1. Oil seal

Skeleton oil seal is a typical representative of oil seal. Generally speaking, oil seal refers to skeleton oil seal. The function of the oil seal is generally to isolate the parts that need lubrication in the transmission parts from the output parts to prevent lubricating oil from leaking. The skeleton oil seal structure consists of three parts: oil seal body, reinforced skeleton and self-tightening coil spring. The sealing body is divided into bottom, waist, cutting edge and sealing lip according to different parts. Usually, the inner diameter of the skeleton oil seal in the free state is smaller than the shaft diameter, that is, it has a certain "interference".

Vertical mud pumps generally use skeleton oil seals, which have outstanding advantages such as low price, simple mechanism, and good sealing performance. They are suitable for sealing mud pumps with medium to high speed and low lift. The disadvantage is that once the skeleton oil seal is damaged, the entire vertical mud pump body needs to be dismantled before replacement, because the quality of the skeleton oil seal is also extremely critical. This type of seal has the advantages of high temperature resistance and strong abrasion.

2. Mechanical seal

Mechanical seals are often referred to as "mechanical seals". Mechanical seal is a shaft sealing device of rotating machinery. Such as centrifugal pumps and other equipment. Since the transmission shaft runs through the inside and outside of the equipment, there is a circumferential gap between the shaft and the equipment, and the medium in the equipment leaks out through this gap. If the pressure inside the equipment is lower than the atmospheric pressure, the air will leak into the equipment, so there must be a Shaft seal device to prevent leakage.

Mechanical seal has the following advantages:

  • The sealing is reliable during long-term operation. The sealing state is very stable and the leakage is very small. According to rough statistics, the leakage is generally only 1/100 of the soft packing seal.

  • Long service life can generally reach 1 to 2 years or more in oil and water media, and can usually reach more than half a year in chemical media.

  • Low friction power consumption: The friction power of mechanical seals is only 10% to 50% of that of soft packing seals.

  • The shaft or sleeve is basically not subject to wear.

  • The maintenance cycle is long and the end face can be automatically compensated for wear. Under normal circumstances, regular maintenance is not required.

  • Good vibration resistance, insensitive to the vibration and deflection of the rotating shaft and the deflection of the shaft to the sealing cavity.

  • Wide range of applications: Mechanical seals can be used for sealing at low temperature, high temperature, vacuum, high pressure, different rotational speeds, as well as various corrosive media and media containing abrasive particles.

However, the mechanical seal structure is complex, requires high manufacturing and processing requirements, and is troublesome to install and replace. It also requires workers to have a certain level of installation skills, and the cost is also much higher.

3. Packing seal

Packing seal is also called compression packing seal. Packing seal is favored by many industrial sectors because of its relatively simple structure, low price and wide source.

Packing seal has the following advantages:

  • There is a certain degree of flexibility. Under the action of pressing force, a certain radial force can be generated and closely contact the shaft. Has sufficient chemical stability.

  • It does not pollute the medium, the filler is not swollen by the medium, the impregnating agent in the filler is not dissolved by the medium, and the filler itself does not corrode the sealing surface.

  • Good self-lubricating performance. Wear-resistant and small friction coefficient. The shaft has a small amount of eccentricity, and the packing should have sufficient floating elasticity.

  • Simple to manufacture and easy to fill.

Horizontal mud pumps are generally installed on sand pumping ships or relay conveying platforms. The working conditions are limited and maintenance and replacement are required to be convenient. Therefore, packing seals are selected, using high-quality high water-based fillers, which have good wear resistance and are stable in use.

The costs of different oil seal forms are different. The seal quality of the same form is different, and the price is also quite different. This requires customers to communicate more with the mud pump manufacturer when making specific selections, and avoid choosing a pump model at a low price.

Be sure to select the correct pump type that suits the requirements of the working conditions to avoid a large increase in later use costs.
